As wedding accessories go, perhaps the most important decision for a bride to make relates to the bridal shoes. They will set off the whole outfit, whether it is traditional or non-traditional.

Wedding shoes must compliment the dress and provide comfort throughout what is going to be a very long but very special day – you will be wearing your shoes from early in the morning to last thing at night and no bride wants to be in pain when she should be concentrating on her new husband and guests!

There are many styles of bridal shoe, taking in heel height, toe style, fabric and colour and all these factors should be carefully considered.

Choose a heel height and toe style that will both compliment your wedding dress and keep you comfortable. If you are used to wearing a flatter shoe, choose a flatter shoe!

And when you go for your final wedding dress fitting, take the shoes. Any last minute changes to heel height could leave the hem of your dress too long or too short. In fact, it would be better if you could have your chosen shoes for every fitting, from first to last.

Fabrics range from satin, lace, crepe, silk satin and matt satin and are available in a variety of colours. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colours other than white either.

If your dress has pink features, try a pink shoe to bring them out. Or how about matching the colour of your shoes to the colour of the bridesmaid dresses? You could even make your shoes your “something blue”!

Satin shoes work well with shiny dresses, crepe for matt style dresses and, of course, lace shoes with a lace dress is an obvious choice.

Vintage wedding shoes are a popular choice as the style and fabric will compliment most wedding gowns, especially the more traditional dress, and are available in a choice of heel heights and styles to provide comfort for any bride.

Small embellishments on the chosen wedding shoe will add that extra bit of class. Consider crystals on shoes if your dress is shiny or sequined while beaded shoes go well with dresses featuring pearls.

You should also consider the type of wedding you are having.

A traditional day wedding would be complimented by a vintage wedding shoe, while a glamorous evening wedding would allow you to wear strappy sandals or similar. If you’re having a beach wedding, heels are a no-no – choose a flat shoe.

Getting married in the summer? Then an open toed style will be fine. Getting married in the winter, however, and you’ll want a closed toe style to keep your feet warm. Again, both styles are available in a vintage wedding shoe.

It’s really about common sense and awareness of your special day as a whole.
